The citadel of Bitche was built in the mid-18th century according to the plans of the famous architect Vauban. The most glorious pages of the fortress' history are those of the Franco-German war of 1870-1871. Under siege for 230 days, the Citadel, equipped with an important system of underground corridors and which could accommodate up to 1000 soldiers, withstood the assaults of an army of 7000 Bavarians and three deadly bombardments.
